Privacy Policy for QuietTime
Last updated: 28 May 2026
David Arthur Software ("we", "us", "our") publishes the QuietTime app ("the App") as a free application supported by optional voluntary donations. This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of information when you use the App.
1. Information Collection and Use
QuietTime does NOT transmit any data to us or to any third party. The App has no network code of any kind. Everything you enter or configure is stored only on the device where the App is installed.
The App stores the following data locally on your device:
- A hashed PIN (your actual PIN is never stored)
- A hashed recovery password (optional)
- Per-day Quiet Time windows (one schedule for each day of the week, each with its own start time, end time and on/off toggle)
- App whitelist preferences (Android only)
- Activity log entries (block/unlock events, override actions, time extensions)
- User preferences (animation theme, wind-down warning timing, wind-down chime sound)
- An optional emergency contact phone number that you enter (Android only). This lets a child place an emergency call during quiet hours without needing the parent PIN. The number is stored only on your device, is never transmitted to us or to any third party, and is erased when you uninstall the App.
This data never leaves your device.
2. No Cloud Services
QuietTime operates entirely offline. There are no:
- User accounts or registration
- Cloud servers or databases
- Analytics or tracking services
- Advertising networks or ad SDKs
- Third-party data sharing
3. Children's Privacy
QuietTime is designed to be configured by a parent or guardian and used on a child's device. The App does not collect any personal information from children. All settings are protected by a PIN set by the parent.
QuietTime is designed to be safe for use on a child's device under the principles of:
- COPPA (the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) — because QuietTime does not collect, transmit, or share any personal information from children, the obligations COPPA imposes on data collectors do not apply.
- UK and EU GDPR — the App does not process personal data on our behalf or transmit it to us, so we do not act as a data controller in respect of information entered into the App. You remain in full control of the data on your device.
- The ICO Age Appropriate Design Code — the App's defaults (PIN-protected settings, minimal data, no tracking, no advertising, no profiling, no nudge techniques) are designed to align with the Code's standards.
4. Permissions
The Android version of QuietTime requests the following permissions:
- Display over other apps: To show the block screen during quiet hours
- Usage access: To detect which app is in the foreground
- Device administrator: To prevent unauthorised uninstallation
- Receive boot completed: To restart the service after device reboot
- Foreground service: To keep the schedule monitoring active
The Windows version runs as a standard desktop application and uses:
- Startup registration: To start with Windows (optional)
- Foreground window management: To display the block screen
5. Data Security
Your PIN is stored using salted cryptographic hashing and cannot be recovered or read. Schedule and preference data is stored in the app's private storage area, inaccessible to other apps.
6. Data Retention
All data is stored on your device for as long as the App is installed. Uninstalling the App permanently deletes all stored data.
7. Support emails and general correspondence
If you email us directly — for example, to ask for help with the App, report a problem, or ask about our Terms — we will receive your message, including your email address and anything you choose to tell us. We use that information only to respond to you and to keep a brief record of the conversation so that we can help you if you contact us again.
- We do not add your email address to any marketing list.
- We do not share your email or its contents with any third party.
- We keep support emails for up to 2 years, after which we delete them.
- Our email is handled by standard email infrastructure with encrypted connections.
If you would like us to delete any correspondence you have had with us, email info@davidarthur.app with “Delete my data” in the subject line and we will comply within 30 days. Because our records are small, in practice we can usually do this immediately.
8. Your Rights
Because QuietTime does not transmit or store any of your data outside your device, we (David Arthur Software) do not hold any personal data about you, and there is nothing for us to access, correct, or delete on a server.
Where you need to exercise rights over data stored locally in the App, you can do the following directly on your device:
- Access / view: open the App and sign in with your PIN to see all stored settings, schedules, whitelists, and the activity log.
- Rectification: change any stored value in the App's Settings screen.
- Erasure: uninstall the App, or clear its data from your device's system settings. This permanently deletes everything.
- Data portability: because no data is held by us in a portable format, this right is not applicable; settings can be manually noted before reinstalling.
- Object or restrict processing: stop using the App and uninstall it.
If you believe we have handled your data incorrectly and are not happy with our response, you have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or by phone on 0303 123 1113.
9. Website cookies and local storage
The davidarthur.app website is a simple static site. It uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-first, cookieless service that records anonymous, aggregated visit data (such as page views and country) without setting cookies or tracking individual users across sites. It does not use advertising cookies or any other tracking. It also stores a small language-preference value in your browser's local storage so that the site can remember the language you selected. This value stays on your device, is never transmitted to us, and can be cleared at any time from your browser's settings.
10. External links
The App contains optional links that open external websites in your default browser. Clicking these links leaves the App; we have no control over those sites' privacy practices and they may set their own cookies and process data under their own privacy policies. The external links currently present in the App are:
- Buy Me a Coffee — buymeacoffee.com/dasoftware. QuietTime is free and supported entirely by optional donations. This link is provided so users who wish to support development can do so. Buy Me a Coffee handles all payment processing under its own privacy policy; we receive only the donor name (or "Anonymous") and any message left publicly with the donation.
- davidarthur.app, our company website, including the Privacy Policy, Terms of Service and User Guide.
- Microsoft Store review page — opens the Store app if you choose to rate QuietTime.
- info@davidarthur.app — clicking the email link opens your default mail client; sending email to us is covered by section 7 above.
The App never opens any of these links automatically; they only open when you click them.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this policy. For material changes, we will also ask you to re-accept the updated Terms the next time you open the App.
